![]() ![]() I didn’t fully understand them at first (thanks Reese, this book would have been totally fab back in about 1993 when I first met him), but I welcomed and appreciated them, fell head over heals for the traditions, the family values, the tuck in that crazy, the over-the-top you do you-ness of it all, and the glorious story that attaches to every antique like a museum of moments. ![]() I met and married a southerner and with him came all the Southern ways. I went to grad school in the South - which was a bit of a culture shock at first. Mind you, I was raised in the North, but I moved South as fast as I could, and now I’ve lived here longer than anywhere else. Because my husband - I like to think he affectionately calls me this - my husband calls me a “Yankee” at every turn. I mean, if you don’t live here, you probably don’t get it. It’s about the South and what makes it so incredibly special. Peel back another layer and this book is sooooooooo much more that just what we all adore about perky, sunshiney, super talented, girl boss, actress of our ages, Reese. ![]() ![]() ![]() He never thought long before giving his reply: “I’ll let you know when I grow up.” That was Dad, ever the clown. I recall asking Dad what he wanted to be when he was a child, that frequent “what did you want to be when you grew up” question. I suppose this is how grief works, how we protect ourselves from sorrow through obscurity. ![]() But then, in the words of Virginia Woolf, “Suddenly, without giving us time to arrange our thoughts or prepare our phrases, our guest has left us.” And since his death-his bodily death-my brain seems shrouded by fog. In those imaginations, the ideas and phrasings seemed clear, free-flowing at the forefront of my mind. Because I knew what would happen I knew what would happen the moment he took his final breath. Not in some macabre sense, but rather as preparation, for the inevitable. ![]() And so, while my words contain an elegiac melody that defines mourning, I hope you will hear it instead as a song of praise for the man who I proudly called “Dad.”īefore Dad passed, I imagined this eulogy. Formed from the Greek roots eu-, meaning “good,” and logos, meaning “speech,” eulogy conveys the notion of a “good speech” or praise about the individual. ![]() The first-elegy-can be traced to the Greek word elegos, which translates as “song of mourning.” The second and more common word-eulogy-also comes from Greek, but communicates something different. In English, according to Merriam-Webster, there are two words we use for a speech given in remembrance of one who has passed. ![]() ![]() ![]() "We meet really quickly, Rowan Fielding, who's the main character of the first book and through the series." "The first season starts where the book starts, in that mood of New Orleans and the sort of ghost story of this house," Spalding detailed. Showrunner Esta Spalding said the eight episode first season is "deeply, deeply inspired" by the first book in Rice's Lives of the Mayfair Witches trilogy, The Witching Hour (1990). But I would say that there's very little deliberately from Interview in Mayfair Witches." ![]() Obviously, it's connected to Anne Rice's thematic and stylistic concentration, so it's very much a part of what she does. "But Mayfair Witches is very much its own project and its own series. "Some are fun, some are deliberate, and some are almost Easter eggs," Johnson explained of any shared references. The later stars Alexandra Daddario ( White Lotus) as Dr. Rowan Fielding, who discovers that she comes from a long line of witches and she may be the pinnacle power of their line.Īt today's AMC Television Critics Association summer virtual press tour panel for the series, AMC's Anne Rice universe executive producer Mark Johnson told reporters (including SYFY WIRE) that the two series will only be tangentially connected in their first seasons. 20, and following "closely after" (per AMC), Anne Rice's Mayfair Witches. ![]() AMC launches its Anne Rice universe this fall with their series adaptations of Anne Rice's Interview with a Vampire on Oct. ![]() ![]() I'll first cover my problems with romance since there's where the main tragedy will be met with for those poor readers in the near future. ![]() At a certain point in the novel, all of this world-building, all of these death flags, they all just become tools to further the disgusting romance plot that this novel becomes. I had high expectations for this novel, and unfortunately it crashed and burned, or perhaps it was just a downward slope the entire time. I loved the idea of the MC exploring all of the different death flags and escaping them. I love the world-building in this novel, the setting, the culture, the magic system, the organizations. The best way I can relate this feeling is if you read a romance novel, just to find out 120 chapters in that it was actually NTR. ![]() ![]() And by fall apart, I mean destroying everything that you had just read for 120 chapters. This novel begins to fall apart around chapter 120. ![]() |
